Air Quality

Striving for cleaner air in all areas

Improving air quality is good for people¡¯s health and wellbeing, and positive for communities. Our goal? To support local authorities with air quality improvement programmes, to deliver air quality assessments for facilities and development projects, and to monitor odour and dust impacts from construction sites.

Our air quality consultants advise from small residential schemes to major mixed-use, commercial, infrastructure, and industrial developments. Our experience includes detailed understanding of the emissions to air from road traffic, power generation, and industrial processes. Through it all, our air quality assessments, dispersion modelling, and data monitoring support planning submissions, help clients fulfil responsibilities under the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPRs), and shape mitigation strategies to reduce impacts on communities and ecosystems.

Sharing similar datasets, we collaborate with transport strategists, acousticians, and environmental planners to enhance both the environment and the development agenda.

Air quality is one of the world¡¯s biggest environmental health risks. We¡¯re here to help with air quality solutions so communities and ecosystems can thrive.

Air quality assessments

We are specialists in air quality assessments for development projects, including land development, regeneration, energy, and infrastructure projects. Our analysis and reports support Environmental Statement (ES) chapters, environmental impact assessments (EIAs), subsequent planning submissions, monitoring programmes and management reports, and damage cost calculations¡ªincluding negotiation with local authorities in relation to mitigation.

Demolition and construction monitoring

Contractors and site-management companies must meet acceptable environmental performance standards as they carry out critical demolition and construction works. We help these companies fulfil their legal obligations, comply with environmental regulations, and enhance their environmental, social, and governance credentials through our construction dust risk assessments and ongoing monitoring programmes. Our air quality monitoring services include pre-construction baseline surveys, air quality monitoring equipment control, and more.

Odour assessment and management

Adverse reactions to odours are assessed by considering FIDOL (frequency, intensity, duration, offensiveness, and location) factors. As the magnitude of these FIDOL factors increases, the adverse reaction can increase¡ªfrom detection of the odour through annoyance and nuisance stages and ultimately to complaint and enforcement action. Our air quality team can provide bespoke odour services including olfactory surveys, dispersion modelling, assessments, and management plans.

Air quality sensor and monitoring networks

Against the backdrop of the World Health Organization¡¯s revised ambient air quality targets, local authorities and site operators are under increasing pressure to improve monitoring. Part of this includes providing members of the public and other interested parties data access to allow informed decisions to improve air quality. We¡¯ve helped construction companies and local authorities design monitoring campaigns, procure and manage air quality monitoring equipment, and implement data management, storage, and user access solutions.
