Persistent droughts and other stressors on the Colorado river basin are threatening the stability and long-term reliability of Southern California¡¯s water sources. The Pure Water Southern California (PWSC) program represents a generational shift in Metropolitan Water District of Southern California¡¯s (Metropolitan) approach to drinking water supply. Through Metropolitan¡¯s partnership with the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, this program will create a sustainable water future that balances local water resources with imported supplies from the Colorado River.
We have been working with Metropolitan on this program since 2016, when we designed and operated an advanced water treatment (AWT) demonstration facility. We have conducted numerous technical studies since then to develop the project definition including program phasing, construction sequencing, cost estimating, nitrate and boron removal strategies as well as regulatory approval.
To support the environmental permitting process, we recently completed a conceptual facilities plan for a full-scale AWT facility. Metropolitan is considering both indirect and direct potable reuse (IPR and DPR) and we are now designing a DPR demonstration facility that will be used to optimize the full-scale design and obtain regulatory approval.
Each PWSC project is a step toward helping secure water for Southern California¡¯s future.
