Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been selected by gold exploration company to initiate the environmental baseline studies for the Cadillac project in Val-d¡¯Or, Quebec. The mandate also includes conducting a preliminary environmental geochemical study and assessing the economic potential for reclaiming tailings from the former Chimo gold mine.
These studies are part of an ambitious 100,000-metre drilling program¡ªthe most extensive ever carried out on the site¡ªdesigned to better define the gold potential along the 15-kilometre Cadillac Fault corridor. The environmental studies will help identify potential site constraints, assess their impacts, and develop effective mitigation measures.
¡°This mandate aligns with our continued strategic growth in the mining sector in Quebec, a province with exceptional potential for natural resource development,¡± said Mark Bernardi, ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ regional growth lead for Environment. ¡°With our strong environmental ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½, we are well positioned to support our clients at every stage of the mining project lifecycle, offering sustainable and tailored solutions to meet their unique challenges.¡±
¡°The findings from these environmental studies will guide our development strategies in a responsible and sustainable manner, enabling the design and implementation of operations that minimize environmental impacts while maximizing the project¡¯s economic potential,¡± said Philippe Cloutier, president and CEO of Cartier Resources. ¡°We look forward to working with the ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ team, whose ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ will be instrumental in achieving our sustainable development goals.¡±
A three-part mandate
²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ will begin by conducting a baseline environmental desktop study to identify key environmental considerations, including atmospheric conditions, surface and groundwater management, ecological habitats, and wildlife.
Next, the team will carry out a preliminary environmental geochemical characterization to assess potential risks associated with waste rock, extracted ore, and processing residues.
Finally, an economic evaluation will be performed to assess the potential for reclaiming historical mine tailings at the Chimo site. This will be supported by a systematic sampling program to guide decision-making.
Supporting the mining sector in Quebec and across Canada
Stantec¡¯s team draws on extensive environmental experience in Quebec and more than 35 years of experience in the mining sector. This new mandate adds to a growing portfolio of major mining projects in Quebec, including the environmental impact assessment completed in 2025 for the Troilus project in Northern Quebec and the Duparquet gold project in Abitibi-T¨¦miscamingue. Elsewhere in Canada, ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ has also contributed to critical minerals projects, notably the Marathon Palladium-Copper Project by Generation PGM¡ªOntario¡¯s first mining project to receive approval from a Joint Review Panel.
